The Mystery of Sea Creatures (1/5): A coral reef love story | Ayana Elizabeth Johnson
TED Talks Daily
Parrotfish serve as the essential "lawnmowers" of coral reefs, maintaining ecosystem health by consuming overgrowing algae caused by nutrient pollution. These remarkable creatures undergo sequential hermaphroditism, changing sex from female to male, and contribute to tropical coastlines by excreting up to 380 kilograms of pulverized coral as white sand annually. Marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson highlights a dire ecological crisis where 90% of large fish and 80% of Caribbean coral have already vanished due to overfishing, climate change, and pollution. While nations like Belize and Bonaire have implemented protections for these vital fish, systemic global changes are required to prevent the total erasure of reef ecosystems within 30 years. Protecting habitat and preventing even fractions of a degree of warming are critical actions to support the hundreds of millions of people who rely on reefs for nutrition and income.
