The forward-deployed engineering model in asset management is undergoing a fundamental shift as AI tools like Fable, Cursor, and Claude Tags redefine how technical solutions are delivered. Relying on "unicorn" engineers—individuals possessing both high-level software engineering skills and deep financial domain expertise—is unsustainable and unscalable for most firms. Instead, organizations should prioritize hiring domain experts, such as former research analysts, who can clearly articulate business problems and leverage AI to bridge the gap to technical platforms. By treating AI agents as distinct entities with scoped API access rather than individual user proxies, firms can create more robust, automated workflows. This transition allows engineers to focus on building core infrastructure and observability layers, while domain-focused analysts drive the customization and implementation of agentic skills, ultimately creating a more efficient and scalable operational flywheel.
