In last Saturday's Johor state election, Barisan Nasional (BN) reclaimed its commanding two-thirds majority, winning 48 of 56 seats. In contrast, Pakatan Harapan (PH) suffered a major blow as a 10% drop in Chinese support shrank DAP's seats from 10 to 6.

While the Islamist party PAS won zero seats, its highly strategic vote-transfer to BN has quietly advanced the conservative "Green Wave" into the south.

In this episode of Global Heartbeat, host Han Yonghong is joined by Dr. Phoon Wing Keong, political observer and chairperson of the Huayan Policy Institute, to analyse whether these shifting tides will undermine Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's leadership and pressure his federal government into calling an early national election.

Hosted by Lianhe Zaobao’s Associate Editor, Han Yong Hong, Global Heartbeat is a Mandarin weekly news and current affairs podcast that is updated every Tuesday, 7.00 PM SGT. It is available on zaobao.sg, Apple Podcast, Spotify and other podcast platforms.
