The 50-Year Lie About China

Podcast cover

Ben Shapiro

The United States and China have transitioned from a failed era of "constructive engagement" to a state of intense geopolitical rivalry. For decades, Western policymakers operated under the flawed assumption that integrating China into the global economy would inevitably lead to political liberalization and democracy. Instead, the Chinese Communist Party exploited this access to build a sophisticated surveillance state, expand military capabilities, and engage in massive industrial-scale intellectual property theft. The shift toward viewing China as a strategic adversary—a perspective championed by Donald Trump—reflects a necessary recognition of geopolitical reality. Despite internal structural vulnerabilities, including a massive debt burden and declining demographics, China remains an aggressive actor. Control over Taiwan and the global semiconductor supply chain represents a critical flashpoint, necessitating a policy of strength and deterrence to counter the CCP’s ongoing efforts to undermine Western interests.
