Defined as the maximum rate of oxygen uptake, this capacity is primarily limited by maximal cardiac output. While a high VO2 max establishes an athlete's performance ceiling, it does not guarantee race success; endurance outcomes rely heavily on threshold training and muscle-level adaptations like capillary density and mitochondrial efficiency. Beyond sports, cardiorespiratory fitness acts as a powerful clinical vital sign, where even modest improvements significantly lower the risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders. Unlike many health markers, there is no upper limit to the benefits of aerobic fitness, as higher levels consistently correlate with reduced morbidity and increased longevity. Relying on standardized normative data rather than imprecise wearable estimates provides a more accurate assessment of an individual’s cardiovascular health and training progress.
