The Revolutionary Black Loyalists! Live with BA Parker and Gene Demby

The American Revolution forced enslaved Black people to navigate a complex landscape of conflicting loyalties and survival strategies. While some joined the American patriot cause, thousands of Black Loyalists, including the congregation of the Silver Bluff Baptist Church, aligned with the British in exchange for promises of freedom. This migration led many to the harsh, rocky terrain of Nova Scotia, where they faced systemic discrimination, economic exclusion, and the 1784 Shelburne race riots. Despite these brutal conditions, the community established resilient settlements like Birchtown. Eventually, many sought a new beginning in Sierra Leone, driven by the hope of establishing a self-governing Black majority. This history underscores the agency of Black ancestors who leveraged colonial conflicts to secure their own liberty, ultimately shaping the diaspora across North America, the Caribbean, and West Africa.
