China's bid to electrify trucks

China is leveraging its established electric vehicle supply chain and battery technology to transform the heavy-duty trucking industry, aiming for 1.6 million new energy trucks on the road by 2030. This transition addresses the significant carbon footprint of freight transport, which accounts for half of all road emissions despite representing a small fraction of total vehicles. To overcome long-haul range anxiety, the government is implementing a 30,000-kilometer zero-carbon freight corridor featuring advanced charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. While the shift is driven by environmental goals, the primary incentive for operators remains economic efficiency, as electric trucks offer significantly lower operating costs compared to diesel counterparts. With sales of new energy heavy trucks surging by 140% in 2024, China is positioning itself to replicate its passenger vehicle success on a global scale, potentially reshaping international logistics and reducing global shipping costs.
