Digital News Report 2026. Episode 4: How people are using AI chatbots for news
Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism
AI chatbot adoption for news consumption is growing, with 10% of global respondents utilizing these tools weekly, marking a three-percentage-point increase from the previous year. Amy Ross-Arquette, a Senior Research Fellow at the Reuters Institute, notes that usage is highest among younger demographics and in Asian and Latin American markets, while remaining stagnant in the US and parts of Europe. Rather than replacing traditional media, chatbots serve as complementary tools for summarizing news, simplifying complex topics, and asking follow-up questions. Despite concerns regarding "zero click-through" rates, where users fail to navigate to original publisher websites, chatbot users report high levels of trust in the information provided. These findings suggest that while AI offers opportunities for efficient news engagement, publishers must prioritize distinctive, high-value journalism to remain relevant as audiences increasingly rely on AI for interpretation rather than just headline access.
