Battery fire safety in energy storage systems depends less on individual cell faults and more on site design, operational practices, and chemical composition. The industry has achieved a 99% reduction in failure rates since 2018 by transitioning from nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which offers superior thermal stability. While active fire suppression is standard, it often fails to address the underlying exothermic heat generation, potentially increasing explosion risks by trapping gases. Instead, passive design strategies—such as proper container spacing and advanced data monitoring—provide more effective mitigation.
