Why you fear the unknown — and what it can teach you | Maya Shankar, Simone Stolzoff
TED Talks Daily
Uncertainty often triggers a biological stress response, yet reframing the unknown as a birthplace of possibility rather than a threat enables personal growth. Anchoring identity in core values—the "why"—rather than external accomplishments—the "what"—provides a stable foundation when life circumstances shift unexpectedly. This perspective allows individuals to maintain resilience during major transitions, such as career changes or personal loss. Witnessing acts of courage or kindness, a phenomenon known as moral elevation, can further rewire the brain, expanding one's imagination of what is possible. Taking small, deliberate actions amidst the "fog" of uncertainty helps mitigate anxiety and fosters clarity, as demonstrated by the pivot from the game *Glitch* to the development of *Slack*. Ultimately, trusting in the capacity of one's future self to navigate challenges reduces the need for preemptive worry and fosters greater equanimity.
