100 Objects #7: The Otis Pamphlet

Podcast cover

99% Invisible

James Otis, a forgotten figure of the American Revolution, served as a catalyst for independence through his inflammatory 1764 pamphlet, *The Rights of the British Colonies Asserted and Proved*. Before the Declaration of Independence, Otis challenged the legality of "writs of assistance," which allowed British agents to conduct warrantless searches. His courtroom oration, witnessed by a young John Adams, introduced radical concepts like natural rights, checks and balances, and the inherent equality of all people, regardless of race. Despite his intellectual contributions, Otis suffered a devastating head injury during a confrontation with a customs agent, leading to a descent into mental instability. He eventually watched from the sidelines as his revolutionary ideas fueled the nation's founding, ultimately meeting a poetic end when he was struck by lightning, cementing his legacy as a tragic, visionary precursor to the American experiment.
