Data centers are increasingly adopting behind-the-meter (BTM) power solutions to circumvent lengthy grid interconnection processes and meet the urgent energy demands of AI infrastructure. These BTM configurations, primarily utilizing gas-based resources like reciprocating engines and turbines, allow developers to bypass utility capacity constraints, though they come at an 80% cost premium compared to standard retail tariffs. As project scales reach average capacities of 2 gigawatts, developers are diversifying into technologies like fuel cells to mitigate local permitting challenges related to noise and emissions. While many of these installations function as temporary bridges until permanent grid access is secured, some recent long-term offtake agreements suggest a shift toward BTM as a primary power source. Future market viability depends on whether evolving load interconnection pathways can provide the certainty required to reduce reliance on these expensive, independent energy systems.
