Is the Protein RDA Too Low for You? What 40 Years of Studies Show - Dr. Don Layman & Dr. Heather Leidy | GLS #214
The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Show
The 2025-2030 U.S. Dietary Guidelines represent a significant shift by prioritizing nutrient-dense protein as the foundation of a healthy dietary pattern. Rather than demonizing specific foods, the new framework encourages a flexible approach where protein intake between 1.2 and 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight supports body composition, satiety, and metabolic health. While the RDA of 0.8 grams per kilogram remains a baseline for nitrogen balance, it is insufficient for optimal health outcomes. Essential amino acids are critical for muscle preservation, cognitive function, and glutathione production, particularly in aging populations. The controversy surrounding these guidelines often targets the development process rather than the underlying science, which consistently demonstrates that higher protein intake, when balanced with appropriate carbohydrate and fat choices, provides superior health benefits compared to traditional low-protein, high-grain recommendations.
