Metacognition—the capacity to monitor and control one's own mental processes—serves as a critical skill for navigating the complexities of generative AI. While often associated with mindfulness and stress resilience, this ability to "think about thinking" relies on the anterior prefrontal cortex, a region that can be trained through practices like meditation and affect labeling. Currently, only 5% of employees effectively leverage AI to improve performance without incurring mental health costs. Achieving "human-first AI fluency" requires moving beyond simple automation to a framework of clarity, flexibility, and vigilance. By maintaining the human in the lead rather than merely in the loop, individuals can use AI as a collaborative tool to enhance creativity and decision-making, rather than offloading cognitive work and risking performance degradation.
