Stuff You Should Know

Freetown Christiania, an anarchist commune established in 1971, emerged from an abandoned military base in Copenhagen, Denmark. Initially a spontaneous squatting project, the community evolved into a self-governing society with its own infrastructure, including kindergartens, theaters, and communal services. While the area became famous for its social experiment in autonomy, it also struggled for decades with the "Pusher Street" drug trade, which attracted criminal gangs and prompted intense police scrutiny. Despite persistent government pressure and threats of eviction, residents maintained their independence by eventually forming a foundation to collectively purchase the land. Today, the community balances its anarchist roots with modern administrative requirements, navigating internal divisions over future development while preserving its unique status as a long-standing, self-organized urban enclave.
