Social media and smartphone usage are not the primary drivers of the current youth mental health crisis, despite widespread public concern. Longitudinal data indicates that social media has minimal impact on teen mental health, with factors like caregiver distress, family conflict, and academic pressure serving as much more significant predictors. While tech companies require regulation, blanket bans on social media or phone usage in schools often prove counterproductive by removing safety filters and pushing youth into less regulated digital environments. Instead of focusing on restrictive policies, society should prioritize investing in mental health resources, such as increasing the ratio of counselors to students and fostering supportive community spaces. Addressing the broader context of adult distress and economic instability is essential to effectively supporting the well-being of the next generation.
