The spiritual life requires a fundamental *metanoia*, or conversion, moving from a superficial focus on worldly goods to a deeper, soul-centered relationship with the *summum bonum*, or the highest good. While material things and human relationships—such as the intense bonds between parents and children—are inherently good, they must not replace the Creator. Prioritizing these creaturely goods over God leads to spiritual instability and misplaced fear. True discipleship demands a radical detachment, as demonstrated by the biblical test of Abraham and Isaac, where the love for God must transcend all other attachments. By shifting focus from the transient goods of the body to the absolute priority of the divine, individuals overcome the paralyzing fear of worldly threats and align their lives with the ultimate truth of the Gospel.
