The blurry ethics of smart glasses

Smart glasses are transitioning from niche gadgets to mainstream devices, offering real-time translation, hands-free navigation, and automated meeting transcription. However, their integration into daily life raises significant privacy concerns, particularly regarding covert recording, facial recognition, and the potential for biometric data exploitation. While these tools offer convenience, they challenge existing social norms of anonymity and necessitate clearer regulatory boundaries to balance innovation with public trust. Simultaneously, research from the National University of Singapore highlights that authoritarian parenting—characterized by high control and low emotional warmth—often backfires. Rather than fostering obedience, harsh discipline drives children to develop deceptive behaviors as a survival mechanism to avoid punishment. Addressing the underlying psychological anxiety, rather than reacting with punitive anger, proves more effective in encouraging honesty and healthy development in children.
