Is technology ruining sport?

Podcast cover

The Inquiry

Technology in sports, from football’s Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to tennis’s Hawk-Eye, aims to eliminate human error, yet it simultaneously threatens the essence of the game. While these tools provide necessary accuracy in high-stakes environments where professional livelihoods are at risk, they often disrupt the flow of play and diminish the atmosphere for spectators. Beyond accuracy, the reliance on digital systems stifles the natural debate and negotiation that historically defined the sporting experience. Furthermore, the constant scrutiny provided by performance-tracking technology can overwhelm athletes, leading to overthinking and potential performance declines. Ultimately, while technology offers precision, it risks replacing the human element of sport—the tragedy, uncertainty, and emotional narrative—with cold, infallible data that leaves no room for the spirit of competition.
