The changing drama name game

Podcast cover

Round Table China

The Chinese entertainment industry is implementing new regulations to standardize actor billing order in TV dramas and online series. Starting July 10th, credits are restricted to three categories: leading role, special appearance, and appearance. Within these categories, names must be listed according to the stroke count of an actor's legal surname, a mandate that extends to all promotional materials, including posters, trailers, and social media posts. This shift aims to curb intense, fan-driven disputes over billing, which previously served as a proxy for market value and influenced salary negotiations. By removing the ability to leverage "traffic" or online popularity for top billing, these guidelines encourage production teams and performers to prioritize content quality and professional acting skills over the status-based conflicts that have historically dominated the industry.
