How your phone keeps you scrolling ... even when you want to stop

Podcast cover

The Indicator from Planet Money

Social media apps utilize psychological mechanisms similar to those developed by the gambling industry to maximize user engagement and addiction. By transitioning from mechanical to digital interfaces, casinos pioneered techniques that keep individuals in a "machine zone" or "dark flow" state, characterized by a loss of time and awareness. This addictive "superglue" consists of four core elements: solitude, which removes social stopping cues; bottomlessness, providing endless content; speed, which accelerates interaction; and personalized algorithms that tease users with the illusion of progress. Unlike healthy flow states achieved through challenging, creative tasks, this digital immersion often leaves users feeling lethargic. Combatting this requires intentional friction, such as removing infinite scroll features, paying for content individually to increase mindfulness, and physically separating oneself from devices to break the cycle of constant, mindless consumption.
