Smart toys and AI-integrated devices increasingly function as "black boxes," concealing their underlying mechanics behind friendly voices and frictionless interfaces. This design fosters deep emotional bonds, leading children to trust these systems more than their own judgment, which introduces risks of manipulation and inappropriate data collection. To mitigate these dangers, children must be encouraged to act as reverse engineers who probe, challenge, and even rewrite the rules of the AI they encounter. By treating AI as a set of human-authored instructions rather than an infallible authority, users can demystify the technology. Engaging in hands-on play—such as intentionally teaching a robot incorrect game rules—helps children recognize that AI is a tool to be managed, not a sentient companion to be blindly followed. This proactive approach empowers the next generation to shape the systems that influence their daily lives.
