Was the Mythos Ban Justified? (Good Idea. Bad Execution.) | AI Reality Check
Deep Questions with Cal Newport
The recent U.S. government decision to place export controls on Anthropic’s Fable 5 model highlights the urgent need for a transparent, consistent regulatory framework for artificial intelligence. While the Trump administration’s intervention appears chaotic and potentially motivated by political favoritism, the underlying issue of AI safety remains critical. Current "guardrails" are frequently bypassed through jailbreaking, proving that relying on voluntary safety measures is insufficient. Instead of allowing companies to market frontier models as existential threats while simultaneously pushing for widespread commercial release, the government should mandate rigorous, pre-release safety reviews. By shifting the focus toward narrower, specialized AI applications rather than massive, unconstrained frontier models, the industry can move toward a more predictable and responsible future where AI developers are held accountable for their products’ safety and societal impact, much like any other consumer technology sector.
