Jakarta’s street food stalls offer a glimpse into broader economic strain. Vendors are quietly reducing portions or even skipping chilli, a sign of “shrinkflation” that many Indonesians say they are already noticing in everyday purchases.

These pressures are tied to wider global and domestic challenges. Rising energy costs, driven in part by geopolitical tensions, have weighed on Indonesia as a net oil importer, while a weakening rupiah has made imports more expensive. In response, Bank Indonesia has tightened monetary policy, and fuel prices for non-subsidised categories have increased, adding to household costs.

Although Indonesia’s economy continues to grow at a steady pace, many in the middle class feel squeezed by higher living costs and currency pressures. Recent student protests over economic issues reflect growing public unease.

This episode of Global Heartbeat explores what is driving these pressures, how policymakers are responding, and what it means for everyday Indonesians, featuring host Han Yong Hong and Lianhe Zaobao’s Indonesia correspondent Nam Yunzhou.

Hosted by Lianhe Zaobao’s Associate Editor, Han Yong Hong, Global Heartbeat is a Mandarin weekly news and current affairs podcast that is updated every Tuesday, 7.00 PM SGT. It is available on zaobao.sg, Apple Podcast, Spotify and other podcast platforms.
