Prioritization as code: An AI-supported framework for platform engineering (Eleanor Millman and Mina Tawadrous)

Podcast cover

Engineering Enablement by DX

Platform engineering teams often struggle to prioritize work without clear revenue-linked metrics. SiriusXM addressed this by developing a weighted prioritization formula incorporating seven impact factors: development speed, runtime reliability, security, cost reduction, platform efficiency, user trust, and data-driven enablement. To resolve conflicting team assumptions, the organization began treating assumptions as code, storing them in version-controlled repositories with associated metadata like timestamps and data sources. This shift transformed subjective priority debates into analytical discussions about shared reality. Integrating AI into this workflow allows teams to surface relevant historical assumptions during project planning, ensuring that human judgment remains the final validation layer. This framework enables teams to align on complex, large-scale initiatives by quantifying value and fostering transparency across the internal developer platform organization.
