You Don't Have a Prioritization Problem, You Have a Strategy Problem
Product Pathways
Effective product prioritization requires shifting from tactical backlog management to a multi-layered strategic framework. Many teams struggle because they attempt to rank hundreds of items without a clear strategy, leading to arbitrary decision-making. Instead, prioritization should flow top-down: vision informs strategy, which defines outcomes, identifies customer opportunities, and finally guides solution selection. By defining value contextually at each layer, teams can "skinny the playing field," reducing the number of competing items to a manageable set. This approach replaces complex, ineffective scoring formulas with data-driven choices that align directly with business goals. Ultimately, strategy acts as the filter that allows teams to say "no" to good ideas that do not contribute to the desired future state, ensuring that resources are focused on the most impactful opportunities.
