Dan Dreyfus: America's Critical Minerals Crisis is Here
All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg
The U.S. faces a massive infrastructure and supply chain crisis as it shifts from a capital-light economic model toward an industrial-intensive future driven by AI, reindustrialization, and national security requirements. This transition creates a severe supply-demand shock for critical minerals, particularly copper and silver, which are essential for everything from data centers to defense systems. With existing mines depleting and new projects taking over a decade to permit and build, the U.S. risks significant energy shortfalls and grid instability. The current reliance on foreign supply chains, especially China, necessitates aggressive domestic investment in mining and processing. Furthermore, the debasement of the U.S. dollar through rising federal debt and social liabilities makes hard assets and infrastructure essential for protecting purchasing power, mirroring the economic challenges observed during the 1970s.
