Why the world is still not built for women | Virginia Santy

Podcast cover

TED Business

Workplaces and urban environments are fundamentally designed around the physical measurements and experiences of men, often ignoring the distinct needs of women. This systemic bias manifests in everything from freezing office temperatures and inadequate childcare facilities to heavy doors and vehicle safety standards that historically excluded female crash test dummies. Addressing these disparities is not merely a matter of comfort but an economic imperative; if women participated in the workforce at the same levels as men, the U.S. GDP would grow by approximately $1 trillion. Redesigning spaces to accommodate caregiving responsibilities and prioritizing the physical well-being of women fosters a more inclusive environment. Management must actively solicit feedback from women regarding their daily physical challenges to dismantle these invisible barriers and ensure that all employees feel truly valued and supported in their professional contributions.
