Is it healthy to share my feelings with everyone? - Ep 710

Podcast cover

Finding You: with Dr. Brad Reedy

Sharing feelings is a practice of self-awareness and ownership rather than a tool for changing others' behavior or managing their reactions. When "I feel" statements are used to guilt or manipulate, they often trigger defensiveness or shame in partners and create existential threats for children, who may interpret parental distress as a failure of their own character. True emotional maturity requires intrapsychic differentiation—the ability to distinguish between external events, internal interpretations, and emotional responses. Rather than seeking consensus or behavioral compliance, healthy communication aims to foster connection by holding space for others' experiences. Ultimately, emotional regulation is an internal responsibility; individuals must cultivate the capacity to sit with discomfort and own their feelings, recognizing that effective communication is only as powerful as the level of consciousness and self-integration behind it.
