Big T and Small t Trauma - Ep 723

Podcast cover

Finding You: with Dr. Brad Reedy

Presence acts as the primary mechanism for metabolizing trauma, as the core of psychological distress lies in the absence of an attuned, regulated nervous system during critical moments. While Big T trauma involves specific, overt events, Small T trauma stems from the subtle, repeated lack of a safe relational container. Therapy functions as a reparative experience, offering a stable, non-judgmental presence that allows individuals to internalize a regulated nervous system and eventually find themselves. This process requires moving beyond the need to be "good" or "right," instead embracing one's shadow and accepting the self in its entirety. True growth emerges not from following external self-help mandates like forced vulnerability or premature forgiveness, but from developing the capacity to sit with one's own fear and humanity, ultimately transforming the wound into a source of wisdom and connection.
