Underrated ways to change the world, vol. II

Podcast cover

Experimental History

Meaningful impact on the world rarely requires heroic, grand gestures; instead, it stems from small, consistent, and practical actions. Addressing neglected, unsexy problems—such as optimizing parking pricing or fixing bureaucratic inefficiencies—yields significant societal benefits. Building community requires being a "public character" who is simply present, or creating "social nucleation sites" through shared, intense experiences. Individuals can also contribute by acting as honest brokers in flawed industries, correcting viral misinformation, or practicing "Hobbitian courage" by speaking up in low-stakes environments. Even seemingly mundane roles, such as being an attentive neighbor or a supportive audience member for creators, foster the social fabric necessary for a functioning society. Rejecting the "superhero syndrome" of wanting to be the sole savior allows people to focus on the essential, everyday tasks that actually improve the world.
