Narcissist's Projection, Projective Identification and Victim's Introjective Identification
Prof. Sam Vaknin
Projective identification functions as a complex defense mechanism where narcissists not only cast off unwanted traits—such as weakness, rage, or shame—onto others but actively coerce those targets to embody these qualities. By forcing others to mirror their internal conflicts, narcissists maintain the integrity of their grandiose false self and mitigate separation anxiety. Because narcissists view other individuals as mere extensions or avatars rather than autonomous beings, this process represents an internal reallocation of psychic energy within their own solipsistic mental landscape. This dynamic serves as a control instrument, allowing the narcissist to manipulate their environment to buttress a pathological comfort zone. Understanding these internal structures is essential for developing therapeutic modalities like Cold Therapy, which aims to realign the narcissist’s psyche by leveraging these internal constructs to improve functionality and emotional regulation.
