The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermons - Catholic Preaching and Homilies
The Trinity serves as the central reality of Christian faith rather than a mere theological puzzle, as evidenced by the universal practice of invoking the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit during prayer. Three conceptual models clarify this doctrine: personhood, love, and revelation. First, the etymology of "person" as a communicative mask implies an eternal exchange of speaker, spoken, and speech. Second, the assertion that "God is love" necessitates a lover, a beloved, and the love shared between them. Finally, God as a revealer requires a speaker, a word spoken, and an interpreter to bridge the gap to human understanding. These models demonstrate that the Father sends the Son to gather humanity into the Holy Spirit, providing a framework for understanding the redemptive process and the relational nature of the divine.
