Hidden Brain

Human psychology and societal structures are not universal constants but products of centuries of cultural evolution. Anthropologist Joseph Henrich explains how historical shifts, such as the Catholic Church’s early prohibitions on cousin marriage and polygyny, dismantled large kinship clans in favor of monogamous nuclear families. This transition fostered individualism and voluntary associations, fundamentally altering human cognitive patterns and economic behaviors. The invention of mechanical clocks further rewired societies by standardizing time, which increased productivity and shifted human focus toward punctuality and market-based efficiency. These cultural practices, often unique to Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) societies, demonstrate that human behavior is deeply intertwined with inherited cultural knowledge. Ultimately, the "collective brain"—a network of interconnected, cognitively diverse individuals—drives innovation and shapes both the psychological and biological development of the species.
