Episode 117: Train Smarter, Not Longer – The Benefits of Minimum Effective Dose w/ Dr. Pak
ClinicalAthlete Podcast
The Minimum Effective Dose (MED) represents the least amount of training required to achieve meaningful strength and hypertrophy gains, challenging the common misconception that maximal volume is always superior. Research consistently demonstrates that significant progress can be made with surprisingly low training volumes, provided intensity of effort remains sufficient. By defining "meaningful" improvements—such as specific increases in powerlifting totals—athletes and coaches can move away from the "maximalist" trap that often leads to burnout and injury. Consistency over years, rather than short-term intensity spikes, serves as the primary driver of long-term adaptation. This approach allows for flexibility, enabling athletes to maintain or improve performance during periods of limited time or recovery resources, ultimately fostering a more sustainable, long-term approach to physical development that mirrors the compounding nature of financial investing.
