Is patriarchy gone or hiding in plain sight? (with Kate Manne)
Clearer Thinking with Spencer Greenberg
Patriarchy remains an entrenched system of male dominance that continues to shape modern social structures, despite significant egalitarian progress. While women have gained professional and social standing, they still perform the majority of domestic labor and face disproportionate risks of sexual violence. Rigid gender norms also harm men, who often feel pressured to suppress vulnerability and adhere to outdated provider roles, leading to increased isolation and mental health struggles. Empirical evidence, such as studies on leadership perception, reveals a persistent bias where women are penalized for being either too competent or insufficiently communal. These dynamics are frequently distorted by online subcultures that weaponize selective data to promote false, grim narratives about gender relations. True progress requires moving beyond these restrictive archetypes to foster genuine empathy and equitable partnerships that allow all individuals to flourish regardless of gender.
