89. Lebanon: The History Behind the Headlines

Podcast cover

Wiser World

Lebanon’s modern instability stems from a rigid, century-old confessional political system that divides power among 18 religious communities based on outdated 1932 census data. This structural paralysis, compounded by a history of foreign proxy interference—including the Ottomans, France, Syria, Iran, and Israel—has left the nation vulnerable to recurring cycles of violence and economic collapse. Hezbollah, originally a resistance movement against Israeli occupation, has evolved into a powerful "state within a state," complicating national sovereignty and regional security. Beyond political strife, the country faces systemic crises, including a 2019 financial meltdown and the 2020 Beirut port explosion, both of which remain largely unaddressed by the ruling class. Despite this, the Lebanese people maintain a persistent, albeit exhausted, resilience, continuously rebuilding their lives and infrastructure in the wake of ongoing geopolitical conflicts and internal governance failures.
