wild /waɪld/ adj. & n. 野外的，野外

wildness /ˈwaɪldnəs/ n. 野蛮，原始

wilderness /ˈwɪldərnəs/ n. 荒野，未开发的地区

in the wild 在自然环境中; 处于野生状态

in the wilderness 在自然环境中; 处于野生状态

wild可以直接做名词，表示自然环境，野生状态；wilderness意思也是荒野，未开发的地区；所以在野外可以说in the wild 或者in the wilderness,注意区分wildness，wildness 侧重表达野蛮的，未开化的这个意思。

Animals would produce more young in the wild than they do in the zoo.

动物在野外会比在动物园里产仔更多。

in the wilderness 远离权力和活动中心，在野，坐冷板凳

in the wilderness除了表示在野外的环境之外，还可以指人远离权力和活动中心，就是我们说的在野或者坐冷板凳
