1st Commandment: No Other Gods

Podcast cover

BibleProject

The 10 Commandments serve as a "freedom ethic," establishing the foundational identity of the Israelites as a liberated people. Rather than a private revelation to Moses, these commands were delivered to the entire nation at the base of Mount Sinai, creating an intense, transformative encounter with the divine. The first command, prohibiting other gods, establishes the exclusive allegiance owed to Yahweh, the liberator who brought the people out of slavery. The Hebrew phrase *al-panay* ("before my face") suggests that placing any other power—whether ancient deities or modern secular ideals like wealth and status—in the place of the Creator leads to dehumanization. Aligning desires and allegiances with the source of all reality is the only path to genuine human flourishing, as any other loyalty effectively functions as a lie that ultimately ruins the individual and the community.
