778: How to Help People Flourish, with Marcus Buckingham

Podcast cover

Coaching for Leaders

Sustainable organizational success relies on leaders intentionally designing experiences that foster human flourishing, a state best described as love. Rather than focusing on incremental improvements for average performers, leaders should prioritize "fives"—the peak, meaningful experiences that drive genuine behavioral change. This process requires a sequential approach involving five core feelings: control, which provides clarity on rules and mission; harmony, which acknowledges and validates individual emotions; significance, which recognizes unique personal stories; the warmth of others, which provides guidance through complex systems; and growth, which supports an individual’s ongoing development beyond the current role. Marcus Buckingham, researcher and author of *Design Love In*, argues that neglecting these emotional dimensions leads to organizational drift and dehumanization. By mastering this "experience intelligence," leaders can cultivate environments where employees and customers feel seen, valued, and empowered to express their authentic selves.
