How the Meaning of Life Affects Your Brain: Part 2 of 3
Office Hours with Arthur Brooks
Young adults face an unprecedented crisis of depression and anxiety, driven by a pervasive sense of existential emptiness and a lack of purpose. This crisis stems from a cultural obsession with "complicated" problems—solvable through technology and logic—at the expense of "complex" problems, which involve mysteries like love, faith, and meaning that cannot be solved but only experienced. To reclaim a sense of purpose, individuals must move beyond the left-hemisphere-dominant reliance on digital tools and engage in *aporia*, the practice of sitting with unanswerable, mystical questions. By intentionally scheduling time for contemplative silence or walking meditation, one can activate the brain's right hemisphere, fostering a deeper, more intuitive understanding of life. This shift from analytical problem-solving to contemplative engagement is essential for navigating the human experience and finding genuine fulfillment in an age of distraction.
