These cases frequently necessitate urgent positive pressure ventilation. Conversely, patients presenting with tachypnea accompanied by normal or high tidal volumes typically indicate systemic issues, including metabolic acidosis, respiratory alkalosis, or dead space disease like pulmonary embolism. Rather than relying solely on blood gases or imaging, clinicians should prioritize visual observation of chest rise and auscultation to rapidly differentiate these etiologies. This approach enables timely, life-saving management for patients at risk of impending cardiopulmonary arrest, emphasizing clinical observation over immediate diagnostic testing in acute, high-stakes scenarios.
