Assist Control (Volume or Pressure) provides consistent tidal volumes or pressures for controlled or assisted breaths, while Pressure Support functions like a variable-resistance exercise band, allowing patients to dictate effort with machine-assisted support. PRVC (Pressure Regulated Volume Control) mimics natural decelerating flow patterns to deliver target volumes, though it risks under-supporting agitated, tachypneic patients by misinterpreting their effort. SIMV (Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation) integrates mandatory and spontaneous pressure-supported breaths, offering a strategy for maintaining respiratory muscle strength, despite its declining use in adult weaning protocols. Mastering these modes enables clinicians to tailor mechanical ventilation to individual patient physiology, ultimately facilitating better tolerance and successful liberation from the ventilator.
