Revisiting: We Need More Words to Describe Audio Stories

Podcast cover

Sound School Podcast

Audio storytelling often suffers from restrictive categorization that limits creative potential and listener engagement. Moving beyond conventional labels like "narrative" or "scripted" allows creators to borrow terminology from other artistic disciplines to better define their work. Applying frameworks like "cubism" encourages non-linear structures, while "arthouse" audio emphasizes poetic atmospherics and vocal modulation. "Brutalist" audio, characterized by sharp, blunt, and distorted poetry, offers another path for delivering impactful, non-traditional narratives. By intentionally selecting these descriptors, producers provide listeners with conceptual frameworks that foster deeper interpretation and allow for more open-ended, imaginative engagement. Jazmine T. Green, an artist and producer, advocates for this shift in lexicon to move away from "hyper-chewed" content, urging creators to embrace ambiguity and allow listeners the space to fill in the gaps.
