#33 No Es Fácil

Podcast cover

Dear Millennial With Megan Tan

Growing up in Cuba involves navigating a reality defined by constant surveillance, economic instability, and a pervasive sense of stagnation. While the island is often romanticized, the daily experience for young people is characterized by the phrase "no es fácil"—a reflection of the struggle to achieve personal goals within a restrictive system. Many young Cubans, such as 21-year-old entrepreneur Roberto, face systemic barriers that prevent professional growth, forcing them to choose between limited state-controlled opportunities and the eventual necessity of emigration. Despite a desire to build a life at home, the lack of incentives and the government's tendency to dismantle private initiatives create a cycle where one step forward is often met with two steps back. This environment leaves a generation caught between their love for their country and the clear, inevitable realization that their highest ambitions cannot be realized within its borders.
