Episode 186 - Is your baby too big or too small?

Podcast cover

The Great Birth Rebellion

Accurate assessment of fetal size remains elusive during pregnancy, as current diagnostic tools like fundal height measurements and ultrasounds lack precision. While medical guidelines often trigger interventions like inductions for suspected macrosomia or small-for-gestational-age infants, these decisions frequently rely on inaccurate data, leading to unnecessary procedures. Many babies labeled as "too big" or "too small" are simply constitutionally healthy based on individual genetics and ethnicity, rather than pathological growth restriction. Although severe conditions like intrauterine growth restriction or uncontrolled diabetes require medical attention, routine reliance on ultrasound-based size estimates often ignores the significant margin of error and the risks associated with premature induction. Clinical practice should prioritize holistic assessment and longitudinal growth patterns over isolated, potentially misleading scans to avoid over-medicalizing normal variations in fetal development.
