Why The Government is Buying $15 Million Satellites | Karan Kunjur, K2 Space
Lightspeed Venture Partners
K2 Space is challenging the industry’s trend toward small, low-power satellites by developing larger, high-power, and mass-produced spacecraft. By vertically integrating critical components like high-power thrusters and solar arrays, the company provides a platform capable of operating across diverse orbits, including Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), which was previously cost-prohibitive. This shift toward larger infrastructure addresses the growing demand for resilience in national security and commercial space operations. With Total Contract Value reaching $500 million, K2 is scaling production toward a goal of 100 satellites per year. The upcoming Gravitas mission serves as a pivotal validation for these 20-kilowatt systems, setting the stage for future 100-kilowatt "Giga" satellites that aim to fundamentally redefine the power density and operational capabilities of modern space infrastructure.
