Alt. Modes of Resistance Training: Accommodating Resistance Using Bands and Chains | CSCS Chapter 16

Podcast cover

Dr. Jacob Goodin

Variable resistance training optimizes force production across the strength curve by utilizing bands, chains, and specialized cams to adjust external load relative to joint leverage. While constant external resistance remains the standard for traditional weight training, accommodating resistance methods effectively overload stronger segments of a lift and mitigate sticking points. Non-traditional implements, including tire flips, log presses, and farmer's walks, provide functional variety, though their specific transfer to athletic performance requires further empirical validation. Furthermore, unilateral training serves as a critical tool for identifying and correcting bilateral deficits, a phenomenon where single-limb force output exceeds bilateral capacity. This deficit is common in developing athletes, whereas advanced strength levels may lead to bilateral facilitation, where combined limb output surpasses individual performance. These techniques collectively enhance training stimulus and address specific biomechanical limitations in athletic development.
