The real reason Venezuela matters

Podcast cover

Sky News

The United States' strategic interest in Venezuela extends beyond drug trafficking concerns to a fundamental mismatch in the global oil market. While the American shale revolution has propelled the U.S. to become the world's top producer, fracking primarily yields "light" crude oil. However, the majority of American refineries, particularly those along the Gulf Coast, are specialized to process "heavy," viscous crude. Consequently, heavy oil imports have surged from 12% to 70% of total imports to keep these facilities operational. While Canada currently supplies 61% of this demand, Venezuela holds the world’s largest untapped reserves of heavy crude, surpassing even Saudi Arabia. With Russia being the only other major source of such oil, Venezuela’s geological assets represent a critical geopolitical variable for American energy security and the long-term viability of its refining infrastructure.
