The gas turbine crunch

Podcast cover

Catalyst with Shayle Kann

The gas turbine market is currently experiencing a historic period of high demand and tight supply, driven by rapid load growth from data centers, artificial intelligence expansion, and coal plant retirements. Tony Brough, president of DORA Partners, highlights that the supply chain—spanning raw materials like nickel and titanium to final assembly—is constrained by intense competition from the aerospace and oil and gas sectors. Lead times for turbines have stretched to 36–48 months, forcing manufacturers to exercise pricing power through significant non-refundable deposits. While grid-scale battery storage and renewables act as partial offsets, the surge in data center energy needs has created a multi-driver market that encourages cautious capacity expansion among major OEMs. Technological innovation remains focused on incremental efficiency gains and the long-term, albeit uncertain, integration of hydrogen-ready combustion systems to meet future decarbonization goals.
